What is New with CAR T-cell Therapy?

More than 130 centers in the US now have CAR-T programs and 1300 clinical trials in CAR-T are listed in the NCI database. In this webcast, expert faculty will review how CAR-T therapies work and the commercially available therapies specific to patients with hematologic and non-hematologic malignancies. The unique adverse events associated with CAR-T will be discussed and faculty will share strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality due to cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity (NT). Faculty will use a case study to help advanced practice providers understand how to assess and manage adverse events in a patient receiving CAR-T therapy.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the mechanism of action and intended targets of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell

2. Review the approved indications for commercially available CAR T-cell therapies used in patients with hematologic and non-hematologic malignancies

3. Classify the patient monitoring recommendations post-treatment to aid APPs in identifying acute and long-term adverse reactions associated with CAR T-cell therapy

4. Identify strategies for monitoring and managing cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity (NT) to reduce morbidity and mortality

Jennie Goble is a Physician Assistant in the Division of Hematology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is an Instructor in the College of Medicine and has a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies.

Jennie has been a Physician Assistant in Hematology for almost 9 years and has practiced in both the inpatient and hospital outpatient settings. She is Silver Quality certified and frequently participates in projects and in education and mentoring of new providers. Clinical interests include acute leukemia and high-grade lymphoma Her passions are high-quality patient care, NPPA education, and quality improvement.
