The goal of this activity is to discuss the identification and management of common side-effects associated with chemotherapy, targeted/oral therapies, and immunotherapy. Participants will learn best practices and strategies for symptom management.

Learning Objectives.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Dee Ann Omatsu, MS, APRN-Rx, PNP-BC, CPON 

For the past year, Dee Ann Omatsu has been the clinical oncology educator for Hawai‘i Pacific Health, covering both adult and pediatric oncology education and clinical program development at Kapiolani Medical Center, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center. She is responsible for ongoing education for nurses and oncology staff as well as maintaining clinical competency. Dee Ann also assists with clinical program development within the oncology service line and is the liaison for staff nurses and advanced practice nurses in facilitating research at our facility. 


Previously Dee Ann was the pediatric oncology nurse practitioner at Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women’s and Children. As a member of the pediatric oncology team her work scope consisted of a variety of duties. She was responsible for direct care of children and adolescents who have or have had cancer. Dee Ann coordinated the first teen and adolescent cancer support group at Kapi’olani Medical Center, founded in 2010. She also coordinated the Long Term Survivorship program at Kapi’olani Medical Center and started the first AYA Survivorship Transition Program.  As a second occupation, Dee Ann is a clinical faculty member at Hawaii Pacific University as a part-time nursing clinical instructor for the bachelors in science nursing program. 
 

Dee Ann’s role as the pediatric oncology nurse practitioner at Kapi’olani Medical Center has provided the opportunity to assist with the diagnosis, treatment and supportive care of children and adolescents with cancer in all phases of their disease; initial care, active treatment, terminal care or long-term follow up care. Her current position as the clinical oncology educator allows the opportunity for professional growth and development beyond just herself at the bedside. She now has multiple areas to influence all the clinical hands that touch oncology patients improve the care that they receive. 

 

Laura J. Zitella MS, RN, ACNP-BC, AOCN - University of California, San Francisco 

Laura J. Zitella is a Hematology Nurse Practitioner in the Hematology, Blood, Marrow Transplant, and Cellular Therapy (HBC) Program at UCSF Health and is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Physiological Nursing at the University of California San Francisco. She earned her Master of Science from the University of Illinois in Chicago. Laura holds certifications as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse. With more than 25 years of experience in oncology practice, Ms. Zitella is recognized as a national nurse practitioner leader. Her clinical expertise includes patients with hematologic malignancies receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, investigational agents, hematopoietic cell transplantation, cellular therapy, and supportive care. 

She is a prominent educator who has delivered hundreds of educational presentations to national and international audiences and authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, web courses, videos, and book chapters. She is a member of the Advanced Practitioner Society of Hematology and Oncology (APSHO), the Advanced Practice Provider Oncology Summit Planning Committee, the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), the California Association of Nurse Practitioners (CANP), the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO), and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC).
