An Overview of Radiation Oncology for Health Care Providers (On-Demand)
SELF STUDY / ENDURING - ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE ACTIVITY: 120 Minutes
Overview
For more than 100 years, radiation therapy has been used to treat cancers. Approximately 60% of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy during their course of treatment in both curative and palliative settings. Radiation therapy is delivered by a team of physicians, radiation therapists, nurses, physicists, and health care associates. This seminar will introduce participants to radiation therapy, how it is used in the treatment of cancers, possible acute and late side effects, and management of these side effects.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss radiation therapy mechanism of action and current indications in cancer treatment
- Differentiate among the various treatment modalities available in radiation oncology
- Describe the radiation therapy workflow from consultation to survivorship
- Identify the most common acute and late radiation therapy side effects and strategies for their management
Target Audience:
This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.
Evenings in Onboarding is supported in part by independent medical educational grants from Novocure, Inc., Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., and Bristol Myers Squibb Company.

Randy L Wei, MD, PHD (Speaker)
As a radiation oncologist, Dr. Wei’s clinical practice focuses on the comprehensive care of children and adults with cancer. Dr. Wei received his medical and graduate degrees at the University of California, Irvine, as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. He then completed his internal medicine internship and radiation oncology residency at the University of California, Irvine. He trained with Dr. Nisar Syed and Dr. Ajmel Puthawala in interstitial brachytherapy and hyperthermia techniques. He served as Chief Resident for the final 2 years of residency.
Dr. Wei recognizes the unique needs of cancer patients and their families after his own father was treated for head and neck cancer. His philosophy on care is to empower his patients with education on their cancer and treatment options, enable patients and caregivers to make informed medical decisions, and provide them access to the most advanced radiation treatments such as intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, interstitial brachytherapy, and proton therapy.
Dr. Wei is a member of ASTRO, Los Angeles Radiological Society, American College of Radiation Oncology, and American Brachytherapy Society. In addition, he volunteers on the Medical Advisory Board for Make-A-Wish Orange County and Imperial Empire. Dr. Wei is on the medical staff at Long Beach and Saddleback Memorial Medical Center.
