Overview
This program will dive into the escalating costs of cancer drugs, examining factors such as R&D expenses and market dynamics. Participants will have a better understanding of the economic burden of cancer care and issues with various clinical trials and FDA drug approvals, with an emphasis on patient safety and healthcare costs. Potential solutions will also be highlighted to reduce drug costs and improve reliability of clinical trial data, offering insights into value-based pricing, competition enhancement and transparency measures.

Mimi Lo, PharmD, BCPS, BCOP
Dr. Mimi Lo is a hematology/oncology/blood and marrow transplant (BMT) clinical pharmacist at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center and serves as an assistant clinical professor at the UCSF School of Pharmacy. She is Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy and Oncology Pharmacy. Dr. Lo received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University College of Pharmacy. She completed her pharmacy practice residency and a specialty residency in oncology at UW Medicine in Seattle, WA.
Currently, she specializes in malignant hematologic diseases, blood and marrow transplantation, and immune effector cell (IEC) therapy. Her practice site includes both the acute and ambulatory care settings. Her areas of research interest include treatment outcomes in adult malignant hematology/BMT/IEC patients and geriatric oncology. Dr. Lo also serves on the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Council and coordinates the Northern California Oncology Pharmacy Network (NCOPN).
Amir Ali, PharmD, BCOP
Dr. Amir Ali is a board-certified Hematology/Oncology Clinical Pharmacist at University of Southern California (USC) Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. Amir received his PharmD at UCSF and completed his PGY1 residency at Kaiser Permanente Orange County. He then went on to complete his PGY2 oncology/hematology residency at USC. Amir currently practices as a BMT/Cellular therapy specialist at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Hospital. He also serves as the PGY2 residency program coordinator along with his roles on the system-wide USC Residency Preceptor Development and Cellular Therapies Committees. Amir’s background also includes extensive national presentations and various grant research topics. His research, publications, and presentations span topics of hematology, oncology, BMT, and ID. He is the primary investigator on three Phase 4 studies with grants totaling over $200,000. Amir serves on the Board of Directors for the Oncology Pharmacy Network of California and is on the program planning committee for The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. Amir has received awards as 40 Under 40 in Cancer, ASTCT New Practitioner, Project of the Year and Professor of the Year at the USC Mann School of Pharmacy..
