Self-care IS NOT selfish! In this program we will review the recent national focus on clinician burnout in the U.S. and describe how the contemporary environment of COVID and virtual care exacerbates the distress experienced by oncology care providers. We will also not only describe the problem, but we will work to delineate the major intervention and self-care strategies with the potential to ameliorate clinician distress and enhance clinician well-being. Remember, self-care IS NOT selfish.

Learning Objectives.

1. Review the recent national focus on clinician burnout in the U.S.
2. Describe how the contemporary environment of virtual care exacerbates the distress experienced by
oncology care providers
3. Delineate the major intervention and self-care strategies with the potential to ameliorate clinician
distress and enhance clinician well-being

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Kathy Madden RN, MSN, FNP-BC, AOCNP, APHN-BC 

Kathy Madden is a Family Nurse Practitioner in the melanoma & cutaneous medical oncology group of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Clinical Cancer Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. Kathy’s experience during the past 2 decades at NYU has included working primarily in adult medicine and oncology with a focus on skin cancers with melanoma, she also serves as a sub-investigator for all melanoma & cutaneous research protocols and select phase 1 protocols at the Clinical Cancer Center.

Kathy lectures nationally in her area of expertise and has multiple publications in her specialty. She has also serves as clinical adjunct faculty for students working toward their bachelor and master of science in nursing. Kathy is also passionate about integrative healing arts and holds board certifications in Advanced Practice in Oncology and Holistic Nursing accompanied by additional certifications in Clinical Homeopathy, Clinical Aromatherapy, IGM® Practitioner and Instructor, Clinical Meditation and Imagery. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, ASCO, APSHO, ANA, American Holistic Nurses Association as well as other professional organizations. Kathy continues to pursue learning experiences that synthesize eastern and western modalities, ultimately enhancing and benefiting both personal and professional endeavors.

Justin Baker MD

Dr. Justin Baker is a pediatric oncologist and palliative care physician as well as a patient-reported outcomes and Phase I and end-of-life care clinical investigator at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His research interests include ethical considerations surrounding enrollment in Phase I clinical trials, AYA palliative oncology care, end-of-life decision making, grief and bereavement issues. He is a recognized international expert and leader in the field of Pediatric Palliative Oncology
