The Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy: A Hands-on Skills Workshop will be taught by two APP faculty experts with experience in performing bone marrow biopsy procedures using a manual and powered approach. The faculty will begin the workshop by presenting a short slide presentation that provides an overview of the bone marrow biopsy procedure (12-15 minutes). Following this, the expert faculty will demonstrate the manual and powered techniques while learners observe. The remaining time will be allocated for learner hands-on skills practice.

Learning Objectives

 

1. Identify the posterior iliac crest and options for positioning the patient    
2. Determine the indications and contraindications for bone marrow aspiration or core biopsy     
3. Describe how to anesthetize the patient's skin, subcutaneous tissue and periosteum in advance of a bone marrow aspiration or core biopsy    
4. Demonstrate the proper technique for performing bone marrow aspiration and core biopsy via simulation using a manual approach and a powered system

Faculty

Andrea (Andi) Foster is a licensed Physician Assistant. She received her B.S. in biology from
Old Dominion University in 1997 and received her Masters’ degree as a physician assistant form the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2001. She has worked with Virginia Oncology as a PA-C since her graduation in 2001. Andi works along side Dr. Michael Lee with special focus in lung cancer, breast cancer, and GI stromal tumors among other cancers. She also has an interest in performing bone marrow biopsy procedures and runs our in-house bone marrow clinic.

Andi is a sub-investigator for several different clinical trials run through Virginia Oncology, including the Persist Trial. She has done several educational talks on the treatment of GI stromal tumors. She is a member of the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology, the Virginia Association of Physician Assistants, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants. When Andi is not at the office she enjoys spending time with her family and staying active doing anything outdoors.
