Overview
Cancer and its treatment can significantly affect bone density and quality, leading to increased risk of fractures, which often leads to poor quality of life. During this presentation, Dr. Jeena Varghese will review the evaluation for bone health, as well as strategies for fracture risk reduction and lifestyle optimization in patients undergoing cancer therapy. Additionally, attendees will gain practical insights into maintaining their patients' bone health.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the impact of cancer and various oncologic therapies on skeletal health
- Review laboratory and imaging studies used for evaluating bone density loss in patients diagnosed with cancer
- Discuss strategies and formulate treatment plans for osteopenia and osteoporosis in patients undergoing cancer therapy

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Andrea Edwards has been a practicing Physician Assistant since 2010 and has been practicing in the field of hematology and oncology since 2011. She received her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed a year of practice in Orthopedics before joining Virginia Oncology Associates.
In 2017, she became the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Supervisor, while continuing to practice clinically. She is focused on providing compassionate and evidence-based care to her patients. In 2023, she became the APP Manager with Virginia Oncology Associates (VOA). She played an integral role in the development of various programs at VOA to include survivorship, an oncology urgent care clinic, inpatient APP utilization, onboarding of new APPs, an oral adherence program and the creation of APP leadership structure.
She is passionate about continued growth and advancement of Advanced Practitioners in Oncology. She previously precepted students and now facilitates continued clinical education for students. She has a special interest in breast cancer and survivorship.
When Andrea isn’t working, she enjoys skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, traveling, watching Steelers football and being outdoors. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children.

Dr Varghese is an Associate Professor in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center. As an Endocrinologist in an oncology setting, she treats patients with primary endocrine malignancies and patients who develop endocrine side effects of various cancer therapies. Her clinical and research interests include patients with adrenal disorders (including adrenocortical cancer and pheochromocytoma) and metabolic bone and mineral disorders. She is currently the co-director of the bone health clinic at MD Anderson.
She is the primary investigator and collaborator on clinical trials evaluating epidemiological, clinical, molecular studies of benign and malignant adrenal tumors, trials evaluating therapies for advanced adrenal malignancies and in patients and clinical outcomes in patients with prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bone. She has published articles and book chapters on various benign endocrine disorders, adrenal cancers and bone health in cancer patients.
