Radiation Therapy: Management of Acute and Long-Term Toxicities

Overview
This program aims to develop a profound understanding of acute and long-term toxicities associated with radiation therapy, coupled with effective management strategies. Participants will gain valuable insights into recognizing, evaluating, and mitigating the adverse effects of radiation therapy, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes.
Target Audience
This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

- Describe three acute toxicities and two long term (late) effects of radiation therapy
- Identify a referral strategy for the management of patients with radiation therapy toxicity
- Select appropriate pharmacologic management for radiation toxicities
Faculty
Deborah Hawkins, ACNP-BC, RN
Deborah Hawkins is the lead Nurse Practitioner in the Head and Neck Cancer Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her undergraduate from The University of Arizona and Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt. She is board certified in acute care and has worked with oncology patients in her current role since 2010.
Outside of her clinical responsibilities, Ms. Hawkins has been piloting a survivorship clinic for head and neck cancer patients for long term management of toxicities from chemotherapy and radiation. She takes an active role in clinical operations and patient experience committees. Her current areas of interest include supportive care regimens in patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiation and maintaining quality standards across multiple network sites.
Deborah Hawkins is a preceptor for the oncology rotation for nurse practitioners. She also enjoys gardening and breeding labradoodles.

NPHF is awarding the contact hours and is responsible for adherence to the ANCC criteria. Upon completion, NPs and RNs will be awarded up to 0.75 credit.
