Overview

In this program, expert faculty will focus on infectious complications in immunocompromised cancer patients, from risk factors and pathogens, to prevention and therapeutic options.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify risk factors for infections in oncology patients focusing on neutropenic fever.
  2. Discuss prominent bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens which cause infections in immunocompromised cancer patients.
  3. Review antimicrobial options to prevent and treat infections in immunocompromised cancer patients.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Andrea Edwards PA-C (Moderator)

Andrea has been practicing as a hematology/oncology physician assistant since 2011. She previously completed a year of practice in Orthopedics before joining VOA. She works alongside VOA physicians with a special focus on breast cancer, among other cancers. She played an integral role in the development of the survivorship program. Andrea serves as supervisor of VOA Advanced Practice Providers. She is a member of the Virginia Association of Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology. Outside of medicine, Andrea enjoys spending time with her family and friends. 

 

Rod Quilitz, PhamrD, BCOP (Speaker)                                                                                                        

Rod Quilitz obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Florida in 1993, then completed his Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital and
Clinic followed by his Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Residency at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.  Dr. Quilitz has continued to work as a clinical pharmacist at Moffitt Cancer Center for thirty years. Dr. Quiltz started his career as an oncology clinical pharmacist specializing in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation but he was always fascinated with the closely related field of Infectious Diseases. 

In 2007, Dr. Quilitz was selected as the first Clinical Pharmacy Specialist to work exclusively with Moffitt’s Infectious Disease Service. His current position is Lead Pharmacist - Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship. Throughout Dr. Quilitz’s professional career, he has maintained a strong interest in the prevention and management of infectious complications in the immunocompromised cancer patient, an area in which he has
been involved in the areas of direct patient care, presentations, publications, research, and professional mentoring.
