Overview

This program offers a comprehensive overview of fertility preservation in patients diagnosed with cancer. Participants will explore indications for fertility preservation, methods to assess reproductive potential, and the logistics and timing of oocyte, embryo, sperm, and tissue cryopreservation. Through case-based discussions, attendees will gain practical insights into counseling patients, coordinating care before gonadotoxic therapy, and understanding future pregnancy outcomes to support informed, patient-centered decision‑making.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify indications for fertility preservation in patients newly diagnosed with cancer
  2. Describe diagnostic tests used to assess fertility and how these tests inform fertility treatment decisions
  3. Review the logistics, timing, and cryopreservation process for oocytes, embryos, and sperm prior to gonadotoxic cancer treatment 
  4. Discuss the potential future pregnancy rates following cryopreservation

Dr. Letourneau is an Assistant Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Utah, where he serves as co-director of the University of Utah’s Oncofertility Program. The University of Utah’s oncofertility clinic serves as a referral center for the Intermountain West, including cities and rural areas in Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Western Colorado and Northern Arizona. Dr. Letourneau is an active clinician-researcher. He is former ASRM/NICHD CREST Scholar and recent recipient of an ASRM Young Investigator Grant.

Dr. Letourneau has published over 75 research articles and abstracts in the field of oncofertility. He has served as an expert advisor to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regarding fertility concerns around cancer drug development. He also serves on the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Fertility Preservation Guidelines advisory committee. Lastly, Dr. Letourneau had worked to help to ensure more universal insurance coverage for oncofertility services, including recently helping to make Utah the second state in the U.S. to cover oncofertility services under their state’s Medicaid plan.
