The Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy: A Hands-on Skills Workshop will be taught by two APP faculty experts with experience in performing bone marrow biopsy procedures using a manual and powered approach. The faculty will begin the workshop by presenting a short slide presentation that provides an overview of the bone marrow biopsy procedure (12-15 minutes). Following this, the expert faculty will demonstrate the manual and powered techniques while learners observe. The remaining time will be allocated for learner hands-on skills practice.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify the posterior iliac crest and options for positioning the patient    
2. Determine the indications and contraindications for bone marrow aspiration or core biopsy     
3. Describe how to anesthetize the patient's skin, subcutaneous tissue and periosteum in advance of a bone marrow aspiration or core biopsy    
4. Demonstrate the proper technique for performing bone marrow aspiration and core biopsy via simulation using a manual approach and a powered system

Jeremy Heinerich is the Clinical Director of Oncology PA's for Mount Sinai Hospital.    He also works per diem at NYP Weill Cornell on the inpatient oncology service.  He is very active in the PA profession from the American Academy of PA's to the NY State Society of PA's as well as in the oncology profession with the Association of PA's in Oncology serving as conference chair,/industry liaison currently and previously as President twice, membership chair, Secretary, and House of Delegates.

Sandy Allen-Bard is a Heme Malignancy Nurse Practitioner currently working at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the Lymphoma Service. Sandy spent 7 years in the pharmaceutical Industry in a variety of roles, most recent at a small company as an MSL. She started her pharmaceutical stent as an Oncology Clinical Nurse Educator with Incyte for several years then developed into a Thought Leader Liaison role. Prior to joining Incyte, Sandy was a Leukemia Nurse Practitioner at Weill Cornell Medicine/NYPH since 2001. She worked very closely with her collaborating physicians and grew the service to a very successful service. Sandy left Weill Cornell in 2014 to join Incyte Corp as an Oncology Nurse Educator for 14 months and returned to patient care at Cornell in June 2016. Sandy has been very passionate about the patients and works very closely with the physicians in the management of the patient care. 

Sandy has been active in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and American Cancer Society and has been a running coach where she trains participants for endurance events as they fundraise for blood cancers. Sandy has used her love for running and has been an active fundraiser for the society herself. She continues to work passionately with many organizations and has been educating her colleagues on these very difficult diseases. Sandy will continue to work in this field until there are better treatments and hopefully a cure. Sandy has been an invited speaker to ONS, Aplastic Anemia Foundation, Gilda’s Club, Yale and Columbia Universities, along with working with speaking projects for pharmaceutical companies.
