Course Overview
The APP Oncology Summit is a two-day conference designed to provide advanced practice providers (APPs) with the latest evidence-based strategies to optimize care and outcomes for patients with cancer. This conference is planned with and for advanced practice providers (NPs, PAs, pharmacists, and nurse specialists) and is a collaborative effort of oncology clinicians from multiple organizations in each community. 

The APP Oncology Summit offers a unique opportunity for APPs from various healthcare teams in the community to collaborate, learn from each other and national faculty, and share best practices on a range of issues related to the care of cancer patients.

Intended Learners
APP Oncology Summits are developed with and for advanced practice providers including NPs, PAs, pharmacists, and nurses.

As part of the multidisciplinary team in the care of cancer patients, students, physicians, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of cancer patients are also welcome to attend.

Laura Blanchard is a graduate of Campbell University, where she received her Master’s in Physician Assistant after first completing her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree at East Carolina University. She is a graduate of the Charter Class of Campbell University’s Physician Assistant program, graduating in 2013 as a member of the Pi Alpha National Honor Society.  Since graduating PA school, Laura has spent her career at UNC Medical Center in malignant hematology where she was hired as the first inpatient APP and now serves as the inpatient APP Supervisor. She also serves as adjunct faculty for Campbell University’s PA program and recently received their Emerging Leader Award. In 2019 she was named the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Triangle Woman of the Year and has served on their executive leadership board since 2021. Laura is a native of Greenville, NC but now resides in Pittsboro, NC with her husband, Steven, her son, Harrison, and her daughter, Haleigh. Her hobbies include trumpet playing, swimming and volunteering.

Jonathan “Jon” McGuirt is a Physician Assistant practicing at the Novant Health Cancer Institute in Winston Salem, NC.  He took a rather circuitous path to becoming a PA, first getting his MPH from the University of South Carolina in 2010. After working 6 years in Charleston, SC he moved to NC to attend Wake Forest and graduated in 2018.  He has practiced in oncology since then, with a current focus on thoracic and neuro-oncology.  When he is not in clinic, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and spoiling their 5 fur-children (and one hedgehog).  Outside of medicine, his loves include travel, coffee, and bashing the drums for the Winston Salem based punk band Hey Revolver. 

 

Benyam Muluneh, PharmD, BCOP, CPP

Benyam Muluneh received his doctor of pharmacy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and completed both PGY1 (Pharmacy Practice) and PGY2 (Hematology/Oncology) residencies at UNC Medical Center.  After residency, he practiced full time as a clinical pharmacist practitioner where he and his team established a pharmacist-led oral chemotherapy program which was designated with an ASHP Best Practice Award in 2015. Muluneh has since co-authored the 2018 Hematology/Oncology Pharmacist Association (HOPA) Best Practices for the Management of Oral Oncolytic Therapy and the 2022 Oncology Nursing Society’s Guidelines to Support Patient Adherence to Oral Anticancer Medications.

Benyam joined DPET in July 2019 as a full time assistant professor. His ongoing research endeavors include: 1) Develop strategies to improve medication adherence in clinical practice; 2) Optimize tolerability and safety of chemotherapy in cancer patients; and 3) Promote chemotherapy access and affordability to underinsured and uninsured cancer patients in the United States and beyond. He also teaches in the PharmD curriculum and has a passion for international health. He is the co-director of the UNC-Ethiopia Alliance and serves as a preceptor for one of the Global Pharmacy Scholar (GPS) experiences to Ethiopia.

 

Rebecca Phillips, MSN, AOCNP, FNP-C

Rebecca Phillips is a Nurse Practitioner at the Duke Cancer Institute, Department of Hematology and Oncology. Ms. Phillips attended Duke University School of Nursing to earn her BSN and MSN. She is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and she is an Advanced Oncology Certified Practitioner. As a Clinical Associate on faculty at Duke University School of Nursing, Rebecca is a guest lecturer and preceptor for the Nurse Practitioner Program. Her professional memberships include the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology, and the Oncology Nursing Society. She lectures on topics related to the function of the immune system, immunotherapy and oncologic emergencies, and cancer related fatigue, among a variety of other topics related to oncology and patient care.

Tiffany Statler is a doctoral-trained physician assistant, who originally joined the Wake Forest family in March of 2017 as a Hematology/Oncology physician assistant and later joined the section of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine in April 2020 where she co-developed the Oncology Supportive Care Clinic. She currently serves as the President-Elect for the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology (APAO) and has spent the past few years focusing on the integration of Hematology/Oncology and Palliative Medicine. Her research interest focuses on the integration of palliative care in the management of malignancies, management of cancer-associated pain and more specifically chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, and researching barriers to palliative care in community settings and underserved populations. She has published research in multiple journals and is presently the Co-Investigator of an investigator-led clinical trial investigating the feasibility of cryocompression in treating bortezomib-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with multiple myeloma.
