Overview:

Did you know that 60-90% of patients affected by cancer need specialized rehabilitation care? Patients may experience different and sometimes worsening physical impairments throughout their care continuum. This activity will provide an overview of the role of rehabilitation in oncology, including strategies to help you identify patients who would benefit from cancer rehabilitation, the referral process, and therapeutic approaches.

 

Learning Objectives.

  1. Describe cancer rehabilitation, the supporting research, and how it aligns with oncology practice guidelines
  2. Outline the appropriate screening to identify impairments and recognize when to refer the patients to cancer rehabilitation
  3. Review common physical impairments cancer rehabilitation can address and therapeutic approaches used to optimize functioning, health, and quality of life
  4. Explain the cancer rehabilitation referral process options to ensure patient access and office efficiency
     

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Jeana Faske BSN, RN, OCN - Texas Oncology

Jeana Faske is the Manager of Nursing Education and Infection Control for Texas Oncology.  She joined the company in 2006 and worked as a clinic nurse for a medical oncologist/hematologist and then went on to work as a nurse manager. She graduated from West Texas A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

Rhonda Bentura, PT, DPT, CLT - ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation, Mechanicsburg, PA                                                                                                       

Rhonda Bentura serves as senior program director for ReVital, Select Medical’s national cancer rehabilitation program. In this role, she is responsible for providing support, resources, tools and mentorship to regional program directors throughout the country to help grow relationships with oncology practices across the U.S. Previously, Rhonda served as a ReVital program director at Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation overseeing program development throughout central Texas. There, she assisted with growth, strategy and development of cancer rehabilitation, lymphedema and pelvic health programs. Rhonda has been actively involved in the treatment of patients affected by cancer since 2005. She is a certified lymphedema therapist by the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. Rhonda holds a doctorate degree in physical therapy from the University of Miami.

RAmanda Hodges, BSN, RN, OCN - ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation, Fort Worth, TX

Amanda Hodges is an Oncology Certified Nurse with more than 25 years experience in oncology patient care and nursing administration. She now serves as the Director of Implementation for ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation. Her role assists with bridging the communication gap between the worlds of oncology and rehabilitation services. She works closely with oncology practices to implement assessment tools and processes to appropriately identify patients' functional needs.
