Interpreting Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Reports For Solid Malignancies: Unraveling Treatment Insights for Precision Medicine
- This dinner program will be a virtual (online) event. -
The advancement of genomic technology has ushered in the ability of using DNA and RNA to better understand cancer biology. Genomic analysis is now standard of care for providing both prognostic insight into cancer behavior and predictive treatment recommendations. Nearly all types of solid tumors and numerous hematologic malignancies include genomic analysis as part of the standard work up in the advanced disease setting with several cancer types also incorporating it into early stages as well as with evolving data. Numerous commercial testing companies exist that provide this genomic analysis using both tumor tissue and/or blood for cell free DNA analysis. This presentation will focus on providing a deeper comfort with next generation sequencing reports in terms of the information provided as well as using patient case examples to translate the information on the reports into treatment options for patients with diverse solid tumors. As our ability to determine the actionability of specific genetic alterations depends on the strength of available literature, common databases and sources of literature will also be discussed in the context of patient examples.
Learning Objectives.
- Identify the common sections of a clinical next generation sequencing (NGS) report
- Formulate an individualized treatment plan for patients with solid malignancies based on findings of a NGS report
- Assess treatment recommendations based on the strength of the literature and patient specific characteristics
Target Audience
This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Faculty
Andrea Edwards, PA-C (Moderator)
Andrea has been practicing as a Hematology/Oncology Physician Assistant since 2011. She previously completed a year of practice in Orthopedics before joining VOA. She works alongside VOA physicians with a special focus on breast cancer, among other cancers. She played an integral role in the development of the survivorship program.
Andrea serves as supervisor of the VOA Advanced Practice Providers. She is a member of the Virginia Association of Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology. Outside of medicine, Andrea enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
Christine Walko, PharmD, FCCP, BCOP (Speaker)
Christine M. Walko graduated with her Pharm.D. degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Medical College of Virginia/VCU in Richmond, Virginia, and a hematology/oncology specialty residency at the University of North Carolina (UNC). She stayed at UNC to complete a 2-year academic oncology fellowship focused on drug metabolism and translational research before taking an assistant professor position at UNC in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics.
Dr. Walko is now a Senior Member in the Department of Individualized Cancer Management, Team Lead for Precision Medicine and Attending for the Personalized Medicine Clinical Service. She also serves on the ASCO TAPUR Molecular Tumor Board. Her research focus is on optimizing drug therapy using pharmacogenomics and pharmacokinetics to personalize intravenous and oral anticancer therapy for patients with cancer.
