This interactive session will guide attendees into being more thoughtful and skilled communicators as we all learn skills to improve delivering difficult news..

Learning Objectives.

  • Recognize communication as a core clinical competency
  • Use “SPIKES” as a talking map for communicating bad news
  • Practice delivering a “headline”
  • Respond to emotion using “NURSE” skills

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Jeana Faske BSN, RN, OCN

Jeana Faske is the Manager of Nursing Education and Infection Control for Texas Oncology.  She joined the company in 2006 and worked as a clinic nurse for a medical oncologist/hematologist and then went on to work as a nurse manager. She graduated from West Texas A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

 

Justin Baker MD                                                                                                               

Dr. Justin Baker is a Pediatric Oncologist and Palliative Care Physician, as well as a Patient-Reported Outcomes and Phase I and End-of-Life Care Clinical Investigator at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His research interests include ethical considerations surrounding enrollment in Phase I clinical trials, AYA palliative oncology care, end-of-life decision making, grief and bereavement issues. He is a recognized international expert and leader in the field of Pediatric Palliative Oncology.
