Optimizing Function: Identifying Decline Risk in the Oncology Population

September 17, 2026

- This dinner program will be a virtual (online) event. -

Overview

This CE session highlights the importance of early identification and management of functional decline in patients with cancer, emphasizing that decline is common, often subtle, and potentially preventable with timely intervention. It reviews practical, time-efficient screening strategies including observation, brief questionnaires, and simple performance measures that can be integrated into routine oncology care to detect early changes in function.

The presentation underscores the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration and cancer rehabilitation in improving patient outcomes, maintaining independence, and reducing complications across the cancer continuum.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify signs of functional decline in oncology patients observed in the clinic or infusion room, including reduced stamina and fatigue
  2. Describe assessments used to evaluate physical function in oncology patients
  3. Discuss available resources to support functional recovery, such as ACSM’s Moving Through Cancer and cancer rehabilitation services
  4. Recognize the value of cancer rehabilitation and how oncology nurses can collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support patient function

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.
