Overview

This program will provide a comprehensive review of cutaneous immune-related adverse events with a focus on immune checkpoint inhibitors. Attendees will gain insights into their clinical relevance, as well as strategies for diagnosis and management of the most common cutaneous immune-related adverse events. Expert faculty will discuss the important role of the advanced practice providers in educating patients regarding these adverse events and improving their quality of life.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize common dermatologic toxicities in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)
  2. Outline the mechanism of action of ICIs in relationship to cutaneous immune-related adverse events (cirAEs)
  3. Describe evidence-based prevention and management strategies for cirAEs
  4. Illustrate the role of the advanced practitioner in patient education, monitoring and prevention of cirAEs to improve patients' quality of life

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Andrea Edwards has been a practicing Physician Assistant since 2010 and has been practicing in the field of hematology and oncology since 2011. She received her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed a year of practice in Orthopedics before joining Virginia Oncology Associates.

In 2017, she became the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Supervisor, while continuing to practice clinically. She is focused on providing compassionate and evidence-based care to her patients. In 2023, she became the APP Manager with Virginia Oncology Associates (VOA). She played an integral role in the development of various programs at VOA to include survivorship, an oncology urgent care clinic, inpatient APP utilization, onboarding of new APPs, an oral adherence program and the creation of APP leadership structure. 

She is passionate about continued growth and advancement of Advanced Practitioners in Oncology. She previously precepted students and now facilitates continued clinical education for students. She has a special interest in breast cancer and survivorship.

When Andrea isn’t working, she enjoys skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, traveling, watching Steelers football and being outdoors. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children.

Megan Bielawa is a board-certified physician assistant specializing in dermatology. She has been working in the field of dermatology for 7 years and specifically in oncodermatology for the past 5 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Hauppauge. She serves as a guest lecturer for the Hofstra University Physician Assistant Studies program where she developed the Dermatology for Patients of Color curriculum. She also serves as a mentor and clinical preceptor for PA students.
