From Data to Decisions: Appraising Clinical Trials for Real-World Practice

SELF STUDY / ENDURING - ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE ACTIVITY: 90 Minutes

Overview

Watch this certified, on-demand webcast featuring Ellen Marin, PA-C, for a comprehensive review of the major types of clinical trials and their role in generating evidence for clinical practice. Participants will gain insights into the key elements of trial design and how to assess the validity and interpret the results of clinical trials. This session will also explore practical strategies advanced practice providers can use for applying these results in clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the major types of clinical trials—including Phase I, II, III, and IV—and explain their distinct purposes in the development of evidence for clinical practice.
  2. Identify key components of clinical trial design, such as randomization, blinding, control groups, endpoints, and statistical power, and explain how each contributes to study validity.
  3. Critically evaluate Phase II clinical trials, with particular attention to single-arm designs, surrogate endpoints, and their role in accelerated FDA approval pathways.
  4. Interpret Phase III randomized controlled trials, assessing methodological rigor, potential sources of bias, and how results can be translated into patient-centered decision-making in clinical oncology.
