Genomic Profiling for Clinical Decision Making in Hematologic Malignancies
- This dinner program will be a virtual (online) event. -
Overview
Precision medicine has revolutionized cancer care in recent years. Novel therapies are now approved on the basis of the presence of specific molecular alterations and consensus guidelines are increasingly incorporating molecular testing to contribute to diagnosis refinement, risk stratification, and therapy selection. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has become an essential part of personalized cancer care. This program will focus on the use of NGS for both myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms, highlighting how to identify clinically significant molecular alterations and incorporate these findings into patient care.
Learning Objectives.
- Identify clinically significant molecular alterations on next-generation sequencing (NGS) reports
- Describe strategies for incorporating NGS results into treatment planning for patients with hematologic malignancies
- Review how genomic biomarkers can inform pharmacotherapy selection in various hematologic malignancies
Target Audience
This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Faculty
Rachel Thelen, MSN, FNP-C, AOCNP (Moderator)
Rachel Thelen is an Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner at the Maui Memorial Medical Center Outpatient Clinic. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UNC Wilmington in 2009 and Master of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University in 2016. She has over fourteen years of hematology/oncology experience. She began her career as an inpatient oncology nurse, followed by outpatient infusion and now, as an advanced oncology practitioner since 2016. She relocated from the east coast to Maui in 2020 with her husband, John, and daughter, Ruby.
Todd Knepper, PharmD
Dr. Todd Knepper is an Associate Member in the Precision Medicine Program of the Department of Pathology at Moffitt Cancer Center. He graduated with his PharmD degree from the University of North Carolina - Eshelman School of Pharmacy, completed a Personalized Cancer Medicine Fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center, and gained regulatory experience as an ORISE fellow at the US FDA with the Genomics and Targeted Therapy group. At Moffitt, he was a key part of the creation and development of Moffitt’s Precision Medicine Program, bringing cancer genomics into the clinic through the molecular tumor board and Precision Medicine Clinical Service.
As an Attending on the clinical service, he provides clinically meaningful interpretations of tumor next-generation sequencing results for patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies and is Precision Medicine Clinical Service rotation leader for 2nd -year heme-onc fellows. His research focuses on the utilization of genomics to improve therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with cancer and to advance understanding of cancer biology. He has co-authored over thirty scientific manuscripts, including in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Clinical Cancer Research, the Lancet, and Nature.
