Best Practices for Opioid Pain Management in Patients with Cancer

Overview

Many patients diagnosed with cancer experience pain during their journey, which can be challenging to manage. Opioids reduce moderate-to-severe pain related to cancer or cancer therapy and have a well-characterized adverse effect profile. This program will review opioid characteristics and strategies for prescribing opioids, as well as approaches in treating complex pain in oncology.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe how and when to initiate opioid prescriptions for cancer patients
  2. Recognize red flag behaviors for opioid use disorder
  3. Discuss options for a collaborative approach to managing oncology patients with complex pain
  4. Identify clinical practice guidelines and policies for opioid prescribing

Faculty

Dana Guyer, MD

Dana Levy Guyer, MD, is a palliative care physician at Lifespan Cancer Institute and Rhode Island Hospital. She received her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics, as well as her fellowship in palliative care and hospice, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is board certified in hospice and palliative medicine, internal medicine, and pediatric medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
