Understanding Solid Tumor Staging: Implications for Patient Care

Overview:

This program will review the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system and its application for solid tumors. Diagnostic modalities and malignancy work-up approaches will be discussed to determine cancer staging. Additionally, it will present patient case studies that illustrate the staging of various solid malignancies and the impact on patient care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system for solid tumors as it applies to clinical practice
  2. Review diagnostic modalities for solid tumors to accurately document cancer staging
  3. Identify tumor staging and how it relates to treatment decision-making in various common solid tumors utilizing patient case examples

Target Audience:

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Susan Sabo-Wagner, MSN, RN, OCN, NEA-BC 

Susan is the vice president of clinical innovation at AON and oversees the clinical programming function that includes care plan design, care program implementation and monitoring, and clinical integration with payers and providers. She has over 25 years of experience in healthcare. Previously, she was the executive director of clinical strategy at Oncology Consultants in Houston, Texas, where she developed and implemented innovative clinical strategies and policies that led to the growth of the company. Susan has created clinical and operations protocols for all levels of practice to promote value-based care initiatives in both commercial and non-commercial payer populations. She has established an appropriate framework and oversight, including input into growth, strategy, resourcing, and decision-making to innovate around consumer-focused oncology programs.

Developing a community-based oncology navigation program and collaborating to implement a fully integrated initiative to address social determinants of health within the practice has been significant in her role. Susan currently sits on the COA Administrators Network Board (CAN), the COA Patient Advocacy Network (CPAN) Advisory Panel and the Houston Cancer Health Equity Collaborative. She is an advisor to the Health Equity & Access Committee for the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology (TxSCO) and sits on the COA Health Equity Committee. Susan holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. Additionally, she has the Nurse Executive Advanced Certification and has held the Oncology Nurse Certification for 16 years.

 

Diane G. Cope, PhD APRN, BC, AOCNP (Speaker)

Diane G. Cope received her doctorate in nursing from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and nurse practitioner certification from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. She has been an oncology nurse for more than 30 years in various roles, including clinical oncology nurse, nursing faculty teaching graduate and undergraduate nursing, oncology nurse practitioner, and nursing leadership. She is currently an oncology nurse practitioner at Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute in Fort Myers, Florida. Diane received the ONS Excellence in Care of the Older Adult with Cancer Award and has edited two geriatric oncology nursing books, co-edited the Oncology Nursing Society Core Curriculum, published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and presented at national and international conferences. She has served as an associate editor for the Oncology Nursing Forum and Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing and is currently a reviewer for the Oncology Nursing Forum.
