Overview

Join us for this 1-hour, CME-certified live dinner program to gain expert insights into the evolving treatment landscape for desmoid tumors. In an engaging discussion format, Abhijeet Kumar, MD, and Mahesh Seetharam, MD, FACP, will explore key aspects of desmoid tumor management—including disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment selection, and adverse event management—through patient case discussions and review of the latest clinical data.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe evidence-based strategies for the diagnosis of desmoid tumors, including molecular profiling, imaging modalities, and the role of multidisciplinary team consultation.
  2. Discuss the efficacy, safety, and expected outcomes of standard-of-care therapies with patients under active surveillance considering systemic treatment.
  3. Develop individualized treatment plans for patients with progressive, unresectable, recurrent, or refractory desmoid tumors based on available clinical data, clinical guidelines, and patient-specific factors.
  4. Recognize, assess, and manage treatment-related adverse events associated with systemic therapies.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to educate oncology physicians as well as advanced practice providers, physician assistants, pharmacists, and nurse specialists involved in the care of patients with desmoid tumors.

Mahesh Seetharam, MD, FACP

Dr. Mahesh Seetharam is a hematologist and oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. He currently serves as a Consultant in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Seetharam earned his MBBS from Mysore Medical College in India before continuing medical training in the United Kingdom and the United States. His postgraduate training included residencies and fellowships at the National Cancer Institute, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Stanford University Hospital. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology.

His clinical and research expertise focuses on sarcomas and cutaneous oncology, where he has played a pivotal role in expanding the sarcoma program at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Under his leadership, the sarcoma program has grown into a premier referral center, offering multidisciplinary care and a robust clinical trial portfolio. Dr. Seetharam also leads initiatives in cutaneous cancers.

Beyond his clinical and research contributions, Dr. Seetharam is involved in medical education, mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows. He has held leadership roles in various professional organizations, including the Arizona Clinical Oncology Society (TACOS).

Dr. Seetharam’s work is widely recognized, with numerous publications, conference presentations, and roles as an ad hoc reviewer for multiple journals.


 

Abhijeet Kumar, M.D.

Abhijeet Kumar, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Clinical Scholar Track) at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. He received his MBBS at the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences in India and completed his internship at the Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok and Pakyong Rural Health Center in Sikkim, India. Dr. Kumar completed his residency at St. Agnes Hospital, Internal Medicine and fellowship at University of Arizona, Hematology and Oncology.

Dr. Kumar is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, American College of Physicians and Medical Council of India. With several research papers published, he serves on the editorial board for Gastrointestinal Cancer: Research & Therapy Journal.

He is focused on lymphomas, non-Hodgkin and hodgkin and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He is also focused on sarcomas. He received the Bressler-Alpert Travel Award in 2016 and was Chief Resident 2013-2014 and Intern of the Year 2011-2012.
