Pancreatic Cancer: Insights on Nutrition

Overview

Cancer and cancer therapy greatly impacts a patient’s nutrition. It is important for clinicians treating oncology patients to recognize and adequately manage or refer patients early to a dietician. Participants will discover the important role oncology dieticians play in the nutrition management of oncology patients, how pancreatic cancer impacts nutrition, and how to identify and treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI).
 

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe how pancreatic cancer can impact a patient’s nutrition
2. Discuss the importance of nutrition assessment and the role of a registered dietician (RD)
3. Recall promising nutrition interventions to help improve patient outcomes in pancreatic cancer
4. Identify and treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI)

Jyoti Benjamin, MS, RD, CSO, CD, FAND

Jyoti Benjamin is a clinical dietitian for over 25 years. Jyoti Benjamin is a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a certified specialist in Oncology Nutrition, with a Masters in Foods and Nutrition is currently working as a clinical dietitian at Kaiser Permanente, Bellevue, WA. She also has a Telehealth practice “Choice Nutrition”. Jyoti has over 25 years of experience and has worked in India and New Zealand. Jyoti is also a Member of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, member of Oncology and Dietitians in Medical Nutrition Therapy Practice groups of the academy.
 

Jyoti completed her work with pancreatic cancer patients, a research project: PG-SGA scores in pancreatic cancer (PC): Improvement in results under RD supervision at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Seattle, WA.
