Navigating the Landscape of Acute Leukemia: Understanding, Treatment, and Hope

Overview

Learners will gain insights into the distinct features of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), including their cell of origin, immunophenotypic markers, cytogenetic abnormalities, clinical presentation, and prognosis. Case scenarios will be used to illustrate the differences between AML and ALL.  Various treatment modalities used for both AML and ALL, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and supportive care interventions will be discussed. The rationale behind treatment selection and multidisciplinary approaches will also be emphasized.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

1. Define acute leukemia and distinguish its characteristics
2. Recognize the risk factors associated with the development of acute leukemia
3. Differentiate between acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), focusing on their distinct features
4. Discuss the treatment modalities utilized for both AML and ALL

Kerrin Sorrie, DNP, AGACNP-BC, AOCNP

Kerrin M. Sorrie is an Advanced Practice Nurse with 8 years of specialized experience in Hematology/Oncology, coupled with 32 years of overall oncology nursing expertise. Currently serving as a Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner at Oncology Consultants, Kerrin excels in diagnosing, treating, and managing treatment-related side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation. Kerrin has a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of South Alabama, along with a Master of Science in Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. With a strong background in patient care and program coordination, Kerrin has significantly contributed to the oncology field, including publications in the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing and active participation in various symposiums. As a licensed nurse practitioner in Washington, Texas, and Florida, Kerrin is dedicated to providing compassionate and evidence-based care to oncology patients.
