Management of Hypersensitivity Reactions in Oncology Patients
- This dinner program will be a virtual (online) event. -
Overview
This program will provide a comprehensive review of hypersensitivity reactions encountered in oncology, related to chemotherapeutic agents, immunotherapy, as well as iron infusions. Attendees will explore different types of infusion reactions and develop an efficient evaluation, monitoring, and management plan. Faculty will discuss drugs that carry a higher risk of hypersensitivity reactions and drug-specific recommended therapeutic strategies, also identifying scenarios when rechallenge may be appropriate. Participating in this program, learners will also gain insights into training new staff and identifying real-world barriers that should be addressed prior to administering medications that carry risk of infusion reaction.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the different types of infusion-related reactions based on pathophysiology
- Outline drugs with increased risk of hypersensitivity reactions
- Describe strategies for prevention, prompt identification, and management of hypersensitivity reactions related to chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and iron infusion
- Identify scenarios where medication rechallenge may be appropriate after a prior hypersensitivity reaction
Target Audience
This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.
