Genomic Profiling for Clinical Decision Making in Hematologic Malignancies

October 24, 2023

- This dinner program will be a virtual (online) event. -

Overview

The use of cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing, and immunophenotyping are well-established as essential assessments for the appropriate diagnosis and classification of numerous hematologic malignancies. In recent years, multi-gene next-generation sequencing (NGS) has rapidly joined these methods as necessary for patient care. Novel therapies are now approved on the basis of the presence of specific molecular alterations and consensus guidelines are increasingly incorporating molecular testing to contribute to diagnosis refinement, risk stratification, and therapy prediction. This program will focus on the use of NGS in the clinical setting, spanning both myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms, highlighting how clinicians can recognize clinically significant molecular alterations and incorporate these findings into patient care.

Learning Objectives.

  1. Discuss clinically significant molecular alterations within various hematologic malignancies
  2. Review how genomic findings in various hematologic malignancies can impact pharmacotherapy selection
  3. Describe how Next Gen Sequencing (NGS) testing has become part of clinical care for patients with hematologic malignancies

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nurse navigators, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of cancer patients.

Faculty

Andrea Edwards, PA-C (Moderator)

Andrea has been practicing as a Hematology/Oncology Physician Assistant since 2011. She previously completed a year of practice in Orthopedics before joining VOA. She works alongside VOA physicians with a special focus on breast cancer, among other cancers. She played an integral role in the development of the survivorship program.

Andrea serves as supervisor of the VOA Advanced Practice Providers. She is a member of the Virginia Association of Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology. Outside of medicine, Andrea enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Todd Knepper, PharmD (Speaker)

Dr. Todd Knepper is an Associate Member in the Precision Medicine Program of the Department of Individualized Cancer Management at Moffitt Cancer Center. He graduated with his PharmD degree from the University of North Carolina - Eshelman School of Pharmacy, completed a Personalized Cancer Medicine Fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center, and gained regulatory experience as an ORISE fellow at the US FDA with the Genomics and Targeted Therapy group. At Moffitt, he was a key part of the creation and development of Moffitt’s Precision Medicine Program, bringing cancer genomics into the clinic through the molecular tumor board and Precision Medicine Clinical Service.

As an Attending on the clinical service, he provides clinically meaningful interpretations of tumor next-generation sequencing results for patients with solid tumors and hematologic malignancies and is Precision Medicine Clinical Service rotation leader for 2nd -year heme-onc fellows. His research focuses on the utilization of genomics to improve therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with cancer and to advance understanding of cancer biology. He has co-authored over thirty scientific manuscripts, including in high-impact journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Clinical Cancer Research, Lancet, and Nature.
