Overview

This activity explores the intersection of cardiology and oncology, focusing on the prevention, recognition, and management of cardiovascular complications arising from cancer treatments. Participants will gain insight into shared risk factors between cancer, oncologic therapy, and cardiovascular disease.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Review the most common cardiovascular complications resulting from anti-cancer treatments, along with strategies for prevention and mitigation
2. Describe the shared risk factors between cancer, oncologic therapy, and cardiovascular disease

Anecita Fadol, PhD, APRN, FNP, FAANP, FHKAN, FAAN 

Dr. Fadol is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing with a joint appointment in the Department of Cardiology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Fadol is a nursing pioneer in the evolving field of Cardio-Oncology. Her extensive and unique expertise in Cardio-Oncology have been recognized nationally and internationally. She has written numerous book chapters, published in peer-reviewed journals, and is the editor of the “Cardiac Complications of Cancer Therapy”. Her program of research is on cardiotoxicity and included the development and validation of the MD Anderson Symptom InventoryHeart Failure (MDASI-HF) instrument, which was subsequently translated to Chineseand Spanish. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the International CardioOncology Society (ICOS), chair of the ICOS nursing leadership, and ICOS nursing researchsub-committee. Dr. Fadol is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners,
American Academy of Nursing, and an Honorary Fellow in Cardiac Nursing by the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing.
