Overview
This presentation focuses on the practical strategies and clinical competencies needed to provide affirming, high-quality cancer care for LGBTQI+ patients. It addresses the unique medical, psychosocial, and communication needs of this population across the cancer care continuum. Topics include best practices for taking inclusive histories, understanding the impact of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) on cancer risk and outcomes, navigating gender-affirming care in oncology settings, and fostering psychological safety in clinical interactions.
Through evidence-based recommendations and system-level insights, this session empowers clinicians to deliver respectful, personalized care that improves both patient experience and health outcomes for LGBTQI+ individuals with cancer.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the terminology used in the LGBTQI+ discourse
- Identify disparities that exist among LGBTQI+ patients with cancer
- Discuss tools to implement in clinical practice for improved cancer care of LGBTQI+ populations
Target Audience
This activity is intended for oncology pharmacists, pharmacy techs, and pharmacy residents who are involved in the treatment of cancer patients.

Kelly Haviland, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, TGNB-C, is a nationally recognized nurse practitioner, educator, researcher, and leader in oncology and LGBTQI+ cancer care. With a strong foundation in clinical practice and program development, Dr. Haviland has dedicated her career to advancing inclusive, high-quality care and elevating the role of advanced practice providers (APPs) in oncology.
She previously served as the Manager of Professional Development for Advanced Practice Providers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she led over 30 enterprise-wide programs focused on education, leadership, and clinical excellence. During her time at MSK, she also maintained an active clinical practice as a nurse practitioner on the LGBTQI+ Clinical Consult Service, helping to establish one of the first dedicated LGBTQI+ cancer care programs in the country.
Dr. Haviland is a frequent national speaker, educator, and author whose research has focused on LGBTQI+ health, APP quality improvement, and supportive care in oncology. In 2024, she was honored with the National Advanced Practice Provider of the Year Award for her contributions to innovation and health equity. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) and is a passionate advocate for intersectional, evidence-based cancer care.
